Herman Miller’s C2 Climate Control Wins Silver NeoCon Award
June 28, 2007 – Herman Miller’s C2 Climate Control, a product that allows for both personal heating and cooling, won a silver Best of NeoCon award at Chicago's Merchandise Mart on June 11th. The Best of NeoCon awards recognize the most innovative new designs for commercial furnishings and are considered among the highest honors an industry manufacturer can receive.
“NeoCon is such a prestigious award and we are thrilled for Herman Miller,” said Steve McPhilliamy, director of design at Insight. “Our team worked closely with Herman Miller to develop a compelling design, and we are happy that it received recognition.”
The Insight team knew it was important that the design fit into the Herman Miller style of great design that is innovative and functional. With that in mind, and also being aware of the need to work around pieces such as the internal fan and heating element, Insight came up with a design that is friendly, approachable, and fun.
“We wanted people to have an emotional reaction to the design,” said McPhilliamy. “We wanted this to be something that people would be interested in and immediately like, even if they didn’t know what it did right away.”
The human-centered design encourages user-control; a touch switch easily turns it on or off and adjusts the temperature. The sculptural shape is different than most technology products that are rectangular or square, making it stand out from typical office products.
The lightweight product is easily moved around personal spaces to provide optimal comfort. In addition to warming or cooling the user with a gentle flow of air, the C2 also acts as an air filter. It is safe, maintenance free and adds a friendly, artistic presence to a desk or workspace.
The C2 Climate Control is ideal for commercial offices, where differing personal preferences tend to create dissatisfaction or conflict regarding ambient temperature settings. C2 is also ideal for home offices or any space where added temperature control would be valued. Temperature control was rated as one of the top 10 work environment qualities that affect job performance, and the C2 allows for workers to be more comfortable in their space.
