Insight's concept design Luma Lane named finalist in green design competition

January 3, 2008 – Insight's environmentally conscious and innovative concept design Luma Lane was recently named a finalist by Re:Route, an international design competition for the re-imagining of urban transportation.

Hosted by renowned green design collaborative Urban Revision, Re:Route is "a competition for visionary thinkers," demanding that its entrants come up with innovative design and incorporate sustainable concepts, methods and materials. "Urban Revision's dedication to green design makes their recognition of our concept design very significant to us," said Steve McPhilliamy, director of design at Insight.

With Luma Lane, Insight supports the growing number of city-dwellers seeking to reduce traffic and environmental impact by biking. The design addresses the real problem of safety that urban bikers face by creating a lighted bike lane in places where physical barriers from vehicle traffic do not or cannot exist. LED illumination minimizes the amount of energy needed to power the lights, lessening their overall environmental impact. The pods also allow for extended path lighting at dusk and at night, and are permanently affixed to the pavement to offer an easy-to install solution.

Urban Revision hosts its six-part design competition to drive participants to address problems commonly found in urban environments by designing an entirely new, sustainable city block. The resulting block is meant to serve as a blueprint for cities nationwide. Insight was one of seven finalists selected for the Re:Route competition by a panel of design experts.
