Graphic cues
To make the ALYX System easy to transport and use in confined areas, Insight developed an interface design that is optimized for a compact touch screen. Because the collection procedure typically follows a standard protocol, we focused on developing a clear system of iconography which allows operators to readily identify the controls and information they need. This approach helped make the compact touch screen easier to use, especially for gloved fingers, because the controls can be larger. In addition, the use of icons greatly reduced the need to translate the interface into multiple languages. Icons, however, are not appropriate for every situation so text is provided in the event of a non-routine situation like alarms. To ensure that the iconography was easy to learn and recognize, Insight conducted several rounds of usability testing with phlebotomists.
