The donor is a user too
Providing a safe and positive experience for donors is essential to keeping blood donations up. Although the ALYX Collection System was designed to be safe and comfortable for donors, Insight developed interactions and feedback that help operators to feel confident, comfortable, and in control—even during an alarm. If the operator feels in control, then she is better able to focus on the donor and the donor is more likely to feel at ease.
Insight also took steps to help operators minimize common alarms such as low draw pressure, which can occur if a donor forgets to squeeze her fist during collection. We developed a tiered notification / alarm system that helps operators identify conditions that could become alarms before an alarm condition exists. This gives operators the chance to intervene, such as reminding the donor to squeeze, thus preventing an alarm altogether. In addition, Insight created specific displays for the donor to help the donor participate more in the collection. A progress display lets the donor see how much time is remaining in the collection and a squeeze indicator lets the donor know when to squeeze.
