Baxter Healthcare was seeking to develop a new-to-the-world portable, automated blood collection technology that would increase the efficiency and output of each donation to twice the normal amount of desired components. Insight’s research team studied the operator’s workflows and the environments in which the new system would be used, and discovered there were unique design challenges. A mobile system would be used in a variety of environments without the support found in the clinic, and operators may be caring for several donors at once in addition to performing secondary tasks like completing paperwork.
